Did you notify the Post Office to hold mail, newspaper delivery, turn off your hot water, provide travel itinery to friends/relatives, phone where you can be reached ? E-mail facilities are avail on Island ( so find out how to access yours !).
When packing, get a couple of sticks of incense (patchouli, opium, etc, something you like) and put a couple in a shoe or somewhere not to stain things. Perhaps a fabric softener sheet ? Nice and fresh when you open the suitcases.
When heading for the Islands, get 2 different Visa/Mastercard accounts, and place one card in the safety box in case you lose your wallet or purse, obtain a passport and/or a copy of your birth certificate with a raised seal and a picture ID. Make 2 copies of the documents and place one in a safe place at home and one in your suitcase or safety box where you stay.
If you made arrangements to rent from the owner (check the Sales and Rental board at the top), bring the written documentation with you. I get 2 copies, one for me to carry and I mail one to Reservations at the facility.
Get travelers checks, I found $100 a day ( roughly) is a good number for my wife and I. Of course some cash for airport layovers, on plane cocktails, taxis and tips is nice and a visa/mastercard is great!
Take a backpack as your carryon with a few light weight clothing items, bathing suit, your meds, binoculars, SUNSCREEN, take Disposable cameras (one underwater), extra keys to your suitcase (it will never be misplaced, grrrr). Pstt, the back pack will be your Island day trip companion!
Pack lightly, the temperature there is 80 degrees most all the time, and a constant sea breeze . For the evening, bring a light jacket or a sweater. Formal attire is not necessary unless going to a function (church, wedding, renewing vows, etc.).
Ah, bring a couple of bathing suits and do use SUNSCREEN, did I say sunscreen ? I buy a straw hat each year there and it protects my biggg ears.
All packed? Take out a third, you will be bringing things home ! Or buy another suitcase on the Island , or mail a box home if you wish to wait in line at the PO. Me, I want to go to the beach, LOL.
Do your best to relax and blend in with the surroundings, be polite, you are visitors (smile), and the natives say OK (it means hello, good morning, etc).
The dress code on Island is casual, no bathing suits downtown!
Almost everything you will need is available on Island. Do not forget personal items, such as meds etc.
You will drive on the left in the Islands, (drivers hug the bushes), sooo if you are not comfy with that, leave the driving to the shuttles and the many cabs available.
The Islands in general are very safe but as in any city, crime is available if you wish to pursue it ! Take cabs when going out in the evening, stay away from back streets and lowly lit areas.Travel in groups when possible.
So you have some fine jewelry ? Wear it to appropriate functions and do not flaunt it on Island. Best bet is to get a safety deposit box and place extra cash, travelers checks, return air tickets, passports, an extra visa card and your prized Jewelry.
If you have a room with a fridge and maybe a cooktop, you may wish to get some items to snack on, The Pueblo is a good place to pick up some items. Also cheap liquor there. At the Castle The Island Trader is a fine little store.
The lowest prices for Liquor to use on Island or take home in the carry case (6 bottles, one which must be Island made) is K-Mart.
Most facilities have eqipment available (tennis rackets, workout rooms, laundry facilities (pack lightly, wash the clothes )) hehehe
Golf is best played in the early am or late afternoon as it gets hottttt
Sunbathing or get your hair braided ? Don't forget to do the back of your KNEES, NECK, NOSE, HAIR PARTS and the top of your FEET and EARS! (Say ok Daddy, grin)
Going boating? This is where the backpack comes in again. Take SUNSCREEN, BVI requires a passport (ID), camera, binoculars, some cash for on board drinks or stopovers, towel, white long sleeve shirt, a coverup for the ladies, sunglasses, and a hat that will stay on.
Also critizism of this page is welcome, please rush it through the proper channels. One flush usually does it ! (Evil Grin)
